The best way is to disassemble the shutter and remove the blades for cleaning, but it's not as easy as just getting in the front. Alcohol is not very effective for the blades, it dries very slowly and pretty much leaves the oil where it was. The best thing for blades, if you want to try cleaning them in place, seems to be CRC "QD" Electronic Parts Cleaner, which comes in large spray cans in hardware and automotive supply stores. Spray this on the blades and then operate the mechanism over and over again until they are dry. No cleaning-in-place really removes the oil, it just relocates it hopefully to a less troublesome place. Operating the blades while they are wet helps to wipe the oil off while it's softened by the solvent. It's best to remove the rear lens cell to keep it clean during this process, but in the Retina it's not so easy to get it unscrewed through the film opening. There was a guy selling a nicely made special tool for it - beljanmfg i think was his name on eBay. |
