heatshrink warp from a hardware store might work. Alternatively, coverings from www.cameraleather.com to simulate the effect of the focussing grip.

If nothing comes of it, then there's always a tabbed quick focussing ring which can be transplanted from a Hasselblad or other type of camera for whom quick focussing rings are made. This would make focussing faster than the one touch zoom approach.
