Using the magnifier, the subject snapped into focus. It appears you have narrowed all of the variables down to the moving elements of the viewing lens. Is it possible a previous owner switched viewing lenses from one camera to another? BTW - Mine is a Model VII. If you can't separate the elements, it would make one think they weren't ever reversed. I am totally out of ideas.
