Well, I figured it out, tell me if I'm right:
The trick is not where the shims have to be, but where they CAN'T. They can't be under the first/last blade combo (obvious, there are two blades already) and can't sit under the 5th blade, because the 1st one would hit it. So shims sit under 2nd, 3rd and 4th blade, in order of assembly.
