The problem you are encountering is most likely related to the release mechanism still having gunk in it. When you press the release button you trip the delay timer for magnesium flash (the delay escapement is locked when you set it to X, but the levers are still involved afair), and get the "B" setting lever involved (or it stays out of the way if set so by the cam faceplate). However, when you use self timer, the part responsible for M-Sync is completely omitted and the main catch is triggered directly. You have to look for problems around the parts #2-3-12-13, or just soak it all in your wonder solvent (take the self timer out of it anyway, there are plastic parts in it, at least in later shutter revisions).
