I'm new to this forum so I don't know if this has been posted before, but the Canon A series of cameras has a neat feature that lets you see what F stop the camera has used on the last exposure (since the meter needle is only an indicator and might not be calibrated properly). Here is the technique:

With the lens on "A", make your test exposure. Then, without cocking the shutter, take the diaphragm ring off "A" and put it on the largest aperture setting (wide open). Push in the depth of field lever until it locks. Looking at the lens from the front, slowly turn the diaphragm ring towards minimum aperture and you will see the diaphragm blades close down. When turning the diaphragm ring no longer makes any change on the diaphragm blades movement, this is the F stop that the camera used on the last exposure as it is "memorized" by the camera body!
