I have used Kodak Brushing Lacquer No. 4, Dull Black. Unfortunately, it is long unavailable, but persistent eBay searching might find it. I think it's a real nitrocellulose lacquer with carbon black (soot) as the colorant.

I would think a solvent based paint would work better than an acrylic in this application.
