Those Nikkor AF's sure don't like being bounced around, do they? You've probably jarred it enough to knock things out of alignment inside, thus jamming the focus mechanism.

This forum deals with mostly older manual focus lenses and cameras, so I don't know how much help you can get, though someone here may have some knowledge of your issue. It's going to take a teardown to fix it, and you will need the proper tools, and diagrams to guide you. There is a Nikon Fix group over on Yahoo where you can find some help if no one comes through for you here. Wish you all the luck with that lens, Nikon makes good stuff.
