The Nikon F has a mirror lock-up facility.
Try operating this and then returning it to the default (non-lock-up) position.

The closing of the second curtain triggers the mirror down - so if the shutter is stuck then this part of the cycle cannot be triggered.

The mirror down action then triggers release of the wind-lock - which in turn may give the impression that the shutter is stuck. It is a chicken and egg diagnosis situation.

If Howard's recommended attention to the foam mirror buffer fails to correct the problem - then get back to this forum to seek further information.
