Are you using any filters on the lens?

Ever think maybe the meter you are comparing is off? I have an 8' floescent light in my basement work shop so I meter off that as my reference. It may not be the best science has to offer or not quite up to the national standards but I find my meters are faily close over the years.

Perhaps your K1000 has an oxidizing solder joint in the circuit. Maybe your batery compartment has oxidation on the battery contacts. 5 years is a bit premature to have a photo cell go bad.

Take the bottom plate off and take a look at the batery compartment and wires.
