Robert,

These older Canonets have shutter priority automation. You might know this already, but the shutter release is blocked when there is insufficient light. Take the aperture dial off 'Auto' and see if the shutter will release.

If it still does not work, your shutter mechanism and blades will need cleaning - lots of information on how to do this can be found on this site.
