Hi Ted-

That's usually an indication that your camera needs a thorough CLA. Does the half second speed seem to time OK after you release the shutter button or is it literally "B"? This camera is a bit complex mechanically- it was one of the first auto exposure SLR's and any deterioration of the original lube is going to slow or stop it's normal functions.
