Ok, thanks for that, it seems to be normal then.

You'd think the same switch would activate either one or the other light, but it seems not. I cleaned what I thought was the right switch, but maybe there is another for the red light. I haven't got round to correlating the wiring diagram with the actual camera.

Strangely, my camera came with a clean battery compartment and a fully charged mercury battery! I think I will have to set the ASA dial a bit lower too. Colour film likes over- more than underexposure anyway.
