Many thanks for your notes and pictures Rick. I've been going about the job in completely the wrong way!

I saw the 4 screws holding the shutter unit to the front-plate at an early stage, but since I couldn't get a screwdriver square on to them, working through the film gate, I decided I had to get the front-plate off. From there on it was tunnel vision all the way, focussing just on getting the front-plate off! It turns out the screws weren't tight, and it was a 5 minute job getting the mechanism off.

This also solves the problem of getting the wind assembly back, because with this in place first, it is now just a matter of refitting the shutter mechanism with the gears set right, which looks a lot easier to control.

It's clear that my broken spring is the one shown on your diagram attached to the shutter ring, so more than likely it is the cause of the shutter problem.

Must remember to always try the easy way first!
