It turns out this lens does use a screw-in nameplate. It is a Sigma 24mm f2.8 "super wide", and it is truly a maintenance-resistant design. Not only was the front plate almost impossible to remove (I had to apply fine oil, naptha, and WD-40 before it would budge.), but the adustment of aperture size is very difficult, and the aperture control ring action is rough. These lenses may be bargains in terms of optical performance, but their mechanical design is the work of the devil.
