Before anyone replies I have found the problem!
I managed to trip the shutter using a cable release and on close examination with an engineers microscope, found some dried crud between the shutter release button and the housing.
A little WD-40 applied with a tooth pick and some gentle manipulation did the trick, the shutter is now working
For $25 I have a nice little German made camera in a real leather case!
