It sounds like your infinity stop is broken or missing; I'll bet you've gone past infinity before the lens finally bottoms out against the front of the shutter in that direction too.

In most front-cell scale focusing lenses, the infinity stop is part of the engraved ring with the distance scale on it, usually held to the lens cell with 3 set screws. If you remove it from the lens you may see where a pin or stop on that ring was supposed to engage another on the front of the shutter. If you can figure out what's broken or missing and replace it, you may be back in business.
