I am surprised by much of what you said specifically because if the threads were properly degreased it should not have a binding problem. Also lithium grease is a bit too "thin" to do a proper job. In any case I have not heard of lithium grease "drying out". Next time, try rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) to clean the threads.
