Manual mode just gives you a 1/60 fixed speed unless you have the Manual Adapter plugged into its little socket next to the lens mount.

Sometimes if a winder has sat idle for a long time, the electrical connection between the battery tray and the winder gets dodgy - when I first got my Winder 1 it was very unreliable, and it improved with use (largely this meant removing and reinserting the battery tray) until it was perfect and then stayed that way.
