Have you actually cleaned the battery contacts? Shiny looking contacts can still cause problems, so give them a good clean and polish with a cleaning board/fine abrasive. If this does not work then it will require deeper delving, and whilst the cause may simple to correct, unless you are into DIY the cost of professional help will be far more than the camera is actually worth. It all depends on where sentiment sits on the scale of values - I thought that the money I paid to have my late Father's first Leica professionally restored was money well spent. Somebody here may have detailed experience of this model and be able to point you straight at the problem. Although all the A Series do have similarities, this is the one model that I have never bothered with.
