The card is about 1.45 mm. I think 1 1/2 millimeters would be about right. My Motormatic is entirely original. I can't guarantee that the foam hasn't shrunk and hardened, so if I were doing this myself, I think it might be good, especially if the foam is soft, to go a bit thicker, but I'm pretty sure if you end up with about 1.5 mm between plate and back, you'll be OK.
