Might be, or it could just be that you're distorting it by gripping it. I usually use a latex glove or similar to give me more grip without having to squeeze too tightly for these sort of things so you don't distort whatever it is you're trying to remove. You can try other tricks like wrapping a bit of electrical flex around the ring and twisting it tightly to grip the ring. This applies equal pressure all around it so no distortion. Putting a latex glove over the ring first will give more grip.
