It was exactly as we had suspected...oil had penetrated between the two elements and formed a perfect ring. Fortunately, the two elements had an air space between them, they were not cemented. I am now trying to clean the glass and re-assemble. It is surprising how much the oil ring looked like a glass edge...had me fooled.
