Hobbes, are you sure you have turned the wedge right way?. From your description It seems to me that you need to "slow down" the rangefinder movement in comparison to the lens movement. For that you would need to lengthen the rangefinder arm, by turning the wedge counterclockwise? At the picture it seems the wedge has been turned clockwise?
Hope I didn't confuse the directions this time myself...
