Here's a few pictures of one opened - but I don't read Japanese. But obviousely everything seems to stay in place neatly. You certainly have to remove the self timer lever but I don't believe it has to be the first thing to do. Never opened one though, only guessing from the pics but those look like the lever is simply goig through the whole in he cover and is fastened to the clockwork mounted to the body.

As said above - I'm only judging from what I have seen in the above links. Certainly somebode else here had one open (or one of it's siblings).
