Not sure. I have some notes on the 35EL, which I think is pretty similar. In the EL, the construction is generally pretty light-duty and things can get bent etc .... in particular I recall that pressing the battery check button tended to bend the electrical contacts to the extent of causing exactly the symptoms you describe: AE works but no needle display in the finder. My notes describe fixing this but it comes back again if you keep using the battery check button. Write [email protected] for a copy of the notes if you'd like to see them.
