The prism isn't hard to take out. In fact there is no need to even remove the wind lever or rewind knob. The biggest problem is the pletora of wires. Email me directly, I have some photos of a Leica R3 that might help you.

Alternative to what? Batteries? The S76 type the XE-7 uses are common as dirt.
