recently bought a tamron 70-300 lens. In AF mode, the motor is making a stuttering sound (like a stick in between fan blades), but does not move the focus ring. works fine in MF mode. Could it be that the lens is damaged?

You got a stripped plastic gear in there. It lost a tooth or two or cracked.
