I recently inspected my Nikon after a 2-year period of non-use. The area above the mirror which cushions the mirror slap is nearly void of its foamy material, with the remaining material shedding black flecks when the shutter is released. Other areas of the camera which use this material for light seals are also shedding this dry, friable material. Any suggestions for replacement of this material? Is this something repair shops normally do? Thanks for any suggestions. |

It is quite easy to replace light seals yourself. go to E-Bay and search "by seller". Enter ID: Interslice. He sells good kits.
The mirror cushion can be replaced in much teh same way. I have read about somebody use neoprene for it.
There is a lot of info about light seals on the forum so I suggest you do a search. |

Yes ..... that's John Goodman. The superlative artisan when it comes to light-seals. His materials are indeed cellular neoprene which will last for life (Yours or the camera's - whichever comes first) ;-)
A very easy job on a Nikon F2A because you can remove the prism and fresnel screen so as to be sure than when removing the old gunk you do not contaminate the fresnel.

Thanks, guys, Jennifer, everyone! The kit is in the mail and soon we'll have that Nikon back in the dark and performing like the champ it is. 98 in Dallas today. No rain. I'm a whipped pup.
