Thanks for the tip Don. However, it is not clear which lever to activate. I have tried the release lever in the Winder attachment socket (pushing the lever marked A in the picture in the link below to the right) with no result. This was also the lever I tried in vain before removing the bottom plate. I have marked the other identifable levers with letters, in case you can lead me any further.

lever is below the slot or cutout at the top front of the plate w/the #s on it - go straight up just above the wires.  Use a flashlite & mag. glass to see it. Its about 1/4 long & should be silver. Using a small screwdriver, push it forward from its back L side -- shutter should release. Try cocking & releasing it a # of times & it might solve the problem.
