When I wind the camera shutter opens completly and closes when I fire. I don't know much about technical things but this isn't right! Someone?

Hello, Henrik. It might be all right. One easy way to understanding Contaflex behavior is to remove the back and see what your film sees. First, wind the camera. Your film should see no light yet, but the shutter and aperture blades should open to allow you to look through the lens and focus. Second, press the shutter release and watch what happens. The gate should pop up (blocking the viewfinder) and the shutter and aperture should close (actually, the aperture closes first, to be technically correct). Your film should be exposed, and depending on the shutter speed and aperture setting, you may see a small blink of light or a wide slow slug of light. Only when you re-wind and cock the camera for the next shot will you be able to see through the lens again. Remember, the aperture blades and the shutter blades are between the rear and central lens elements, so in order to view through the lens, they must be open.

Another thing to check is to attach an electronic flash (with the shutter's MXV selector lever set to X) and see if, looking through the shutter as it fires, you see the bright flash through the lens. Sometimes the wind/release mechanism in the Contaflex malfunctions and upsets the close/open/close sequence, but it can be hard to detect the problem because the shutter appears to cycle... in these cases, the flash does not synch properly.

Ok thanks, I think I understand now.It all became clearer when I looked from the back of the camera and saw how it worked. But is the shutter supposed to close-open-close when fired? It seems to just close and nothing else and seems to close on one speed regardless what speed is set,and the selector cant be moved from x-m,only between v-x.

When fired, first the film gate will swing up rapidly, blocking the focus screen and any light it might allow into the chamber. Next the aperture blades will close as far as they are allowed to. Finally, the shutter timer will engage, and depending on the speed selected, the blades will close. This sequence happens very quickly. The shutter blades will stay closed until you wind the film for the next picture. As you wind/cock, the film gate drops first (covering the film you are advancing and protecting it from light), and next the shutter and aperture blades will open to allow you to focus the camera. The shutter should close at different speeds, depending on the the shutter speed for which it is set.
