Yesterday I received a Welta Weltini, the coupled rangefinder version of the Welti described in the articles section. The Compur shutter runs flawless after a few drops of lighter fluid on the escapement gears, the Tessar lens is sparkling after cleaning and the body leather is regaining its color after some runs with black shoe polish. The viewfinder is so dirty that you can hardly look through it. I could loosen and lift the top cover a bit but the 'mushroom' shutter release button is still hindering me from removing it completely. The shutter button seems to be riveted to the shutter release mechanism. Any ideas how to remove it? |

Last night I figured it out. Remove all screws around the top cover and screw off the rangefinder window. Lift the cover as far as possible on the viewfinder eyepiece side, remove the strap lug base plate and the strap lug. Now lift the cover on the shutter release button side. The lever beneath the button is NOT riveted to the shutter release shaft but rather has a 'fork link' which can be released by pushing the cover a bit to the left (when seen from behind). Now you have full access to the (very well designed) rangefinder system (which needed a lot of cleaning). You can remove the top cover completely by removing the screws of the left strap lug base plate and the leaf spring of the rewind release lever. |

Re-assembly is a bit more tricky since you have to place the 'fork' of the shutter release lever (below the shutter button) around the rivet in the shutter release shaft. To do so, first you have to remove the base plate of the left strap lug and the leaf spring of the rewind release lever. Now you can pull off the plate together with the shutter release lever which is linked to it. Put the strap lug through the hole in the top cover, and carefully slide back the strap lug base plate almost completely into position. Don't lift the shutter cover more than necessarily. Lift the top disk of the advance shaft so that the half-cut stud of the release lever may slip under it. Now push the shutter cover slightly to the right, in proper height so that the 'fork' of the shutter release lever meets the above mentioned rivet. You don't have good access to the strap lug base plate screws now, but by slightly twisting and turning the top cover (without slipping off the link again) you can reach them with a screwdriver and tighten them again. Similar with the right strap lug baseplate. |
