my Yashica-44 (not 'A' or 'LM') is having some problems with the slow shutter speeds. worked when i got it a couple of weeks ago, but they're firing late if at all, from 1/8 and slower. probably needs a little cleaning. so how do i get inside? i really love this little camera, so i don't want to attack it without a little guidance. probably just needs a little lighter fluid. anyone know? thanks. |

You need to take the fascia off. There are four screws, and cut-outs for the levers to pass through, hidden underneath the leatherette. This leatherette is very brittle and will probably shatter as it comes off (it did on mine) I ended up with a working but not very pretty camera as I have not yet found a similar thin enough material to replace the original covering material . |

yashica leatherette is probably the most brittle there is (well, the old leica vulcanite might give it a run...), and finding a good match for the grey cameras is tough, since every manufacturer seemed to have their own version of the color. I have tried spray painting black leather with grey paint from hobby shops (they have a good selection from all of the different aircraft camouflage colors), but still haven't hit on a really good match..... |

i managed to get it all off except for the lower left corner, the smallest piece. which broke into two pieces. i should be able to glue it back on...hopefully! i'm staring at the shutter mechanism right now, wondering if i should start dowsing it with lighter fluid. |

When you get the shutter up and running resist the urge to glue the leather back on right away. If the shutter is really gummed up it sometimes comes to life only to get stuck again if you let it sit for a week or so, and it will need a second helping of lighter fluid. When you have already glued the leatherette back on it is certainly beyond salvage if you need to prie it off a second time. |

I have a Toyoca 44 with a stuck shutter. Does anyone know if the above route to shutter access will also work on the Toyoca? |

As far as replacement coverings are concerned, it might be worth asking here if Mr Asahi can cut a set for a Yashica 44: http://aki-asahi.com/store/ |
