I recently acquired a mint Ricoh XR-M 35mm SLR.
According to the manual, when I load film and close the camera back, the film should automatically be advanced to "1".

The first time I tried this, the film did not advance automatically until I fired the shutter.

The manual states that the camera retains previous camera settings in memory for 30 minutes.

I removed the batteries, waited an hour, then reinserted them. Once I did that, the film advanced automatically without having to press the shutter button.

Is this characteristic of the XR-M? Do I always have to remove the batteries, and then reinsert them to make the camera advance a roll of film automatically due to memory retention.

Has anyone encountered this issue with their Ricoh XR-M?

In other words, shouldn't auto advance work every time without having to remove and reinsert the batteries?

Any input is appreciated

You shouldn't have to remove and replace batteries every time.

You say this is a recently acquired camera. Did this happen just the first time? Has it worked correctly since then? If it was just a one-time occurrence I wouldn't be too concerned. Sometimes they just need some exercise after a long period of disuse.
