Hello. I am new to this forum and a wanna-be camera repair person. Can anyone tell me, on a Ricoh 500 rangefinder, if the lens which appears to screw in is supposed to unscrew to expose the shutter? If so, is there a special tool for this? Also, on this camera, does the outer ring around the lens body assembly unscrew also? This is the front outer chrome ring on the overall lens barrell assembly. Thanks... |

Which Ricoh 500 are you referring to? There are a few different models. |

It is a Ricoh 500. I would assume access to the shutter in all of the Ricoh 500 models would be the same since they are are quite similar. |

I wouldn't be so sure of that... These two Ricoh 500s look mighty different to me! http://photo.net/classic-cameras-forum/00DI1H http://home20.inet.tele.dk/sylvest/indexRICOH500G.html It may well be that there are two sets of Ricoh 500s, one like the first and one like the second, but even so it would still help to know which one of the two it is! I have Five-One-Nine, it's very close to 500. Unscrew nameplate around front element, there should be notches. Then frontal chromed piece comes off. Then unscrew front element (it can sit stiffly there, be careful with grip - don't scratch glass). At this point you can work naphtha-o-matic method against shutter blades. To access shutter, you have to remove metal plate - turn small locking screw and turn plate. Usually Bulb mode doesn't work so you'll have to visit shutter. |

Thanks. I see the notches. Now I will have to devise a precise tool so as to not mar the housing. Thanks again... |

Adrian, thanks for your input. I believe the Ricoh 500 "G" and the Ricoh 500 are totally different cameras. |

Sounds suspiciously as though they re-used the name for a later series, with many variants (mine is a 500ME, obviously there's a G, etc). Hope I didn't sound too snarky... I've leart something from this thread, anyway! Adrian |
