Hi, i have a mint I think unused Minolta x700. added to my collection. This one has an odd fault. If left swiched off the shutter refuses to fire. Lights come on , depress shutter release lights remain on , but shutter reses to fire, at least for a minute or so. Left switched on for a few minutes the camera then works fine ? Is this the capacitor on its way out, or does it just need using ? thanks in advance for any ideas |

The capacitors need time to charge up. If you get some super fresh batteries that measure higher than 1.5 v it will work. |

I think it's probably a tired capacitor. My X-700 did this for a while and then did it intermittently, and eventually stopped working altogether. I am about to order some capacitors, and hope that solves the problem. |

Update: I bought the capacitors from Micro Tools (about 12 bucks including shipping for a pack of 5), and did one of my two X-700's, one that I found in a bargain bin for $5 as is. No joy! No shutter still, though the lights all light, etc. The other one, which did work until recently, got a new bottom capacitor (the easy one) and no joy there either. I have yet to take the top off because one screw is seized, and the head stripped. I already munged up two of the bottom screws so this time I hope to sit down some day and cut a new slot in that screw, and try again without damaging the camera. So far, though, I'm disappointed in my results. |

There is a lot of stuff on this topic in the archives. Perhaps this might help: https://kyp.hauslendale.com/classics/forum/messages/2/17606.html Just one example. |

That link above points to another link to a German site showing the capacitor locations, with an amusing picture to conclude it, captioned "Wenn gar nix mehr hilft ." Which more or less translates to "when nothing else works." X-700 accompanied by a nice big hammer. I'm not quite there yet, but have other projects that take priority, so I may table the X-700 project for a while. |
