im new to slr photography
decided to take the plunge recently and ordered a minolta xg-1
recieved it in the mail with no batteries and the film advance moves a small amount (about20-30 degrees and isnt moving the internal part that advances the film)the mirror is down and the shutter is closed and i believe the self timer button is pressed in
if i press the shutter button it depresses but doesnt activate the shutter
any clue to the issue
(i just purchased the batteries for the camera but havent had a chance to put them into the camera

The camera doesn't work without the batteries.

As Ronnie said - the camera won't work without batteries. So in the current state the shutter is cocked but cannot be released due to missing batteries. Once you have batteries inserted you should be able to release the shutter and to wind on again. You can do this without film loaded.
The camera does not have self-timer button which can be pressed in. The red plastic thing on the front is a light that will blink when using the self-timer. It's not supposed to be pressed on.
The self timer is activated via the main switch which has the following settings:
B.C. = battery control
ON
OFF
SELF TIMER
The self timer will work on all shutter speeds except "B". To use it rotate the selector to the self timer position and press the shutter relase. The light will start blinking and after about 10 seconds the picture will be taken. To interrupt the self timer operation rotate the selector to OFF. After using the self timer don't forget to move the selector from the self timer position.
Enjoy the XG-1.

You'r welcome. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.
Enjoy the camera and thanks for reporting back.

Martin
