What is your opinion of Ed Romney's "Basic Training in Camera Repair"? Is it worth purchasing or would Thomas Tomosy's books be a better choice? How about Romney's repair manual for the"Yashica Mat 124"? Is this an instruction manual or just a set of exploaded assembley charts like the ones that can be downloaded free? Hugh Holden |

Look at Henry's reviews under the books section. I don't have much to add to what he said. Romney's Yashica Mat manual has a section on how to use a TLR effectively and some basic disassembly instructions. It also has the assembly charts in the back. I found it useful, but wished that he would have added more information on repairs. |

I bought one of Romney's repair manuals years ago and it was a complete waste of money! Later I wrote to them asking a specific question regarding Weston light meters which was shown and got absolutely no reply. Save your money on the Romney manuals. Conversely, I wrote to Mr. Tomosy thru his publisher and got a very nice explanation to answer my question. |

David, If you emailed Romney within the last year or so I can understand the no reply. Ed Romney died. His wife still sells the manuals but that is probably about all. He helped me several times via email when I was first starting. I rather liked him though I've seen his newsgroup postings and he could get opinionated....is that the word I'm looking for? :-) Henry |

It's a shocker to hear that Mr. Ed Romney died. I e-mailed him a year or two ago and received a reply, great guy. I bought his "Revised Training in Camera Repair" and it's definitely one I wouldn't hesitate to buy again. I was snooping around edromney.com and it mentioned that Steve Grimes just died too! Geez, so many loss of great camera repairmans. |

If I had to choose one or the other, Tomosy would probably win; his books are vastly better-produced and well organized, and packed full of good ideas and pointers. Ed's "Basic Training" has good stuff in it too, but it's kind of hit-or-miss, the bit you need might or might not be there. I have both (The Romney book is from many years before Tomosy started his), but I refer to Tomosy more often. Romney's guides on specific models can be handy, some are on models you don't find anywhere else. Some are xeroxes of factory manuals, others are his own work, and some are a combination of both. |
