I just got a Zeiss 135 2.8 on ebay and was surprised to see that it has a built in lens hood. When the hood is out, it seems you can turn it a little and friction holds it out. But, when its retracted and you point the lens down, the hood slides out on it's own. There doesn't seem to be any friction to hold it in. Any way to solve this, or just live with it. It's a little inconvenient to have it always slide out. Is there anyway to remove the hood (it seems to have a stop the keeps it in the barrel) to see what material is in there to give it friction. I may be able to renew it. |

The stepped ring that retains the hood could be just screwed onto the front of the lens barrel, on the other hand it could be part of the actual barrel itself. In the later case, you have to completely dismantle the barrel and remove the hood rearwards. Usually you find that there is a ring of felt, on the inside of the hood, which provides the friction. A simple dodge, is to work a small piece of self adhesive felt into the gap between hood and barrel. Sometimes you may find that two or three small pieces, equally spaced around the circumference, will work better. Jon Goodman provides very good self-adhesive felt that will work perfectly, either as a dodge or proper replacement. If you lick the adhesive layer, you will find that the piece of felt will slide easily into the gap. You will find details of how to contact Jon Goodman in his 'Replacing Light Seals' to be found in the Articles section of this Forum |
