Has anyone had any success in making a Karat compatible cartridge out of a standard 35mm cartridge? I have a Karat 2.8 on the way and it doesn't include any of the special cartridges. Would taking out the spool and capping the ends of a 35mm cartridge work or is the height and shape not a close enough match? Thanks in advance. |

Standerd 135 cassettes are significantly higher than Karat cassettes. Having them side by side the Karat cassette ends where the lid of a 135 cassette starts. A lousy photo of them: Besides that the Karat cartridges have some kind of guiding system inside to prevent the film from getting caught. Alternatively Agfa Rapid cassettes can be used. The look slightly different - they have some kind of "nose" used for film speed selection on certain cameras (not all Rapid cameras had it). East German SL cassettes are not compatible even if the system is quite the same. Hope it helps Martin |

Hi, I just remembered a posting in a different forum. A photographer from Portugal adjusted empty FOMA cassettes to fit his Welti (SL cartridges). He wrote: QUOTE Homemade Rapid cassette from a Foma film cassette: removed about 2 mm in height, took out the spool and closed the holes in the lids with black paper. Polypan F inside, tip of the film in the original "receiver" cassette. Not such a difficult task ... UNQUOTE Not much lost in my opinion if you try the same. rgds Martin |

Thanks for the info. I've since gotten a hold of some Karat and Rapid cartridges, but I'll try making some myself as well. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to how one mght replace the felt in an old Karat/Rapid cartridge? I imagine I'll have a limited supply of cartridges and will be using them over again quite a bit so I'd like to extend their lifespan for as long as possible. It should be possible to remove the old felt with an Exacto knife and to scavenge replacements from standard 35mm cartridges, but how difficult might it be to glue them in place without gumming up the opening? What adhesive might I use? I'm thinking cyanoacrylate, but it might be difficult to remove the next time the felt needs replacing. |
