Hello, I have a QL17 (not New, not GIII) with a dead CdS component. I find no reference to change it, does anybody know what generic cell can I buy at my local electronics store? Regards, Guillaume |

I am not sure whether this applies to your Canonet model, but I guess that if it is not too different from other cameras of the same vintage, newer cells can be used, but it is a matter of dimensions, mounting facility AND electrical suitability (zero to several K-ohms); you have to ask for LDRs instead of CdS cells. |

Yes I'm mainly wondering about what you call electrical suitability. All photoresistors do not have the same range and as mine is out of order I cannot measure its resistance from total dark (should be infinite) to sunshine. |

Probably from a Canonet 28. This camera had a slightly wider range of exposure than the QL17GIII. (EV3-EV17 vs EV3.5-EV17 for the GIII, according to the Canon camera museum) but it should be close enough. |

Poum, there are not many ways to get an identical replacement cell. You can only salvage one from a donor Canonet or, as an alternative, find one (as I said zero resistance in full light, 5-6 kohms approx. in complete darkness). You will, of course, have to align that one with a variable resistor (I am pretty sure there is at least one one in the light meter circuitry). |
