This happened a few weeks ago. I haven't tried to fix it yet, but noticed that when the GN setting on the lens is set to a high number and focused close, the blades appear to stop down to f/16 or f/22 as appropriate.

FWIW, changing the aperture ring from 2.8 to 8 and back again causes the apertur blades to MOVE slightly (side to side; not close-open). Almost feels like something needs to be tightened.

Am I stuck shooting this at f/8 and wider? (could be worse, I know.)

Sounds like the aperture blades need to be cleaned. I have seen some instructions posted for this, but cannot find the link. Try a Google search.
