a friend of mine has 2 leicaflexes, both out of business due to prisms with fungus. he was told a while back that it's not worthwhile to fix 'em since getting a new prism would cost $400 or so, plus the replacement work. is it actually that bad/is there a cheaper solution?

If the fungus has not damaged the silvering, there is a chance that the prisms can be removed and cleaned.

If the silvering is damaged, the prisms will need to be resilvered or replaced.

If the camera is actually an R model, a replacement prism from the corollary Minolta model should work.
