I came into a Yashica-Mat and I’m wanting fix it my self. And I was hoping for some insight on the problem before I began. This is what is happening; I take the back cover off and put it back on, press the shutter release then I am able to wind the crank clockwise until it comes to a stop. Then wind the crank counter-clockwise until it stops. Then I can snap the shutter. After doing that I should be able to wind the crank for the next shot, but the crank will not wind until I start the whole thing over again. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. |

For the mechanism to work properly, you need a spool on the take up side (it sounds like you have one in there). Sometimes, though, the wheel that presses against the take up spool in the take up chamber will slip if there is no film on the take up spool and the symptom you describe occurs. This happened to me with an old style metal spool. For testing the mechanism, I wound some masking tape around an empty spool, which provides enough friction against the wheel in the take up chamber. With that kind of a prepared spool, this problem went away, and it turned out that the crank mechanism actually worked flawlessly. |

I always load a roll of film in medium format cameras, before testing them. Not only does it prevent the problems mentioned above, it can also reveal problems with backs/magazines etc. |
