I found my Mom's old 8 mm Kodak Brownie video camera in a box. It has a white powder on it--mildew or mold? What would be safe to use to clean it? The leather case that partially covers it falls apart when I try and remove it. Any suggestions? Is it worth restoring or trying to sell?

This is probably an 8mm film movie camera. There are many types of value, the resale might not be much just the sentimemtal value. White powder is mildew. It will clean up. To test motor wind it up and try it or if it is a newer model that runs on batteries you will have to clean or replace battery housing. There are still a few sources of film in 8mm. If not workable at least you have a conversation piece. don

Yes, it's 8mm film. I wound it and it did run! Yeah! There is no film, but I think I read online that the film is available, but expensive. Glad it didn't have 50 year old batteries in it! Do I need to use anything special to clean the outside?

I would use diluted alcohol and rag and Q tip. I had some 8mm movies transferred to dvd, I'm on film in front of a 1949 Ford. I think I saw some film from eastern Europe in 8mm. At least you have a winter project. Have fun..Don

Thanks, Don. I'll give it a try.

And, if that doesn't work, try lighter fluid.
