Hi all,
not sure if this fits exactly Repair forum, but don't think Restoration is better. Anyway....I got leather camera case, which appeared to have smell and look at picture, I wonder if this change of lining is sign of non-welcome organics. Brownish areas seem to be on lining only, I have not torn it off to inspect leather under it because possibility of return, though touching it doesn't suggest leather is rotten under lining.

I have read ERC's are common to grow up fungus, but I can't figure if this is it.

Thanks a lot for reasonable ideas.

I have some cases that look like that. I believe it is staining from the old glue they used to stick the lining to the case. I never thought about it being an organic problem like mold. If you notice, the stains are mostly in areas where the lining touched the case in use so it also has a possibility of being oil residue from the camera over the years or "hand sweat".

Oh, that. I thought they were usually called "never-ready cases".

Thanks Tom, this makes sense. After inspecting case it seems that most of stain areas coincide with parts of camera. That looks better than I were ready for.

David, my theory is "ever ready" relates to possibility to carry camera. Anyway, there are times when compact case isn't that bad.

It is possible to clean these stains with a mixture of Household Ammonia and Hydrogen peroxide, mixed just before application. You apply with a brush or Q-tips. They will get bleached. You can also apply dry cleaning petrol later and brush it dry. The smell will go off.

Prasanna, thanks for hint. I haven't dealt with ammonia so far, so I yet have to figure where to get it. Probably I can use some other chemicals containing ammonia, like window cleaner. In any case I will try solution on small part of lining to see effect.

Most Super Markets and drug stores sell Household Ammonia for cleaning. Check in the cleaning and Detergents section.

Thanks Prasanna.
I just thought lining should be carefully cleaned after using ammonia/h.peroxide solution as contaminated lining potentially would be more evil to camera than stains. Probably I will reward myself using camera/case and then decide on cleaning.
