I have a 1961 zorki4 that has one of the shutter springs broken: the opening curtain roller unfortunately turns without any resistance... The roller doesn't seem to disassembly (at least apparently) so I can't get inside and try to rebuild the spring. Does anybody have some ideas/suggestions? For sure it should be easier to substitute this part with some donor camera... but it is so exciting to resuscitate an old mechanism.... |

I found how to disassemble the roller: one end of the external sleeve is screwed on (hidden by the glued curtain). Now that I have a look inside it seems that the spring is not broken but it has to be hooked in a slot of the screw cap. I have to clean and verify if everything is ok, but at least I can try to work on it.

You should note that the quality of the steel used in these springs is very variable - As a consequence some examples are prone to fatigue if the shutter is left tensioned for long periods of time. In this case it is sometimes possible to solve the problem by increasing the spring tension; however, do not increase the initial tension to such a value that the springs become coil bound when the shutter is fully wound. Even if you get the shutter speeds correct, the springs will eventually fracture. |

Many thanks Glenn for your valuable notes. Yesteray I cleaned the old lubricant and verified the spring. It is still ok. I've re-inserted the hook in the slot of the screw cap: it seems to work. In the next days I'll (try to) reassemble it and, after the cleaning and lube, will test in the "new life". |
