I have a student with a Canon AE-1 with a problem. When you attempt to advance the film with the film advance lever the shutter fires. Does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it? I've never encountered this before. |

First, remove the battery and see if it still happens. If so, it is not an electronic problem. The most likely source it that the magnet visible in center of bottom (with bottom cover removed) is not holding. You can take something like alcohol and a toothpick and clean the magnet keeper and face and them operate the wind lever a few times. If that is the problem, when the alcohol has dried, it should work fine. |

It’s my experience that Ed is right but since there are two magnets visible whet you take off the bottom you need to understand that he is referring to the one on the rewind side of the camera you can tell which one when you try to wind – you will see a shaft with a white tip that pushes the keeper into the magnet. If cleaning doesn’t work (the hard part is removing the cover) and the magnet still will not hold replacement of the magnet assembly is called for, not to hard a repair if you know your way around a soldering iron. Good luck |

Battery drain with Canon AV-1. The meter is still active on "L" lock. It should switch the camera off, but it doesn't. The battery has to be taken out each time that it's not in use, otherwise the battery drains. Could anyone give me any idea what fault this might be? |

Have same problem with Canon A-1 (not AE-1 or AV-1). Was using tripod and had retaining screw pretty tight on bottom of camera. Now each cock of film advance lever causes shutter to trigger. After removing battery the problem persists. Will check out the magnet idea. Any advice concerning camera bottom removal? Have never been "inside" the camera before but am reasonably mechanically inclined. Looks as though only two small set screws hold bottom in place. Should I also expect springs to pop? Will light tightness be a potential problem upon replacement of bottom? Thanks all! |
