I recently aquired a Yashica J in excellent condition, however the shutter blades may be gummed up and as such the blades will not open when firing. Can anyone explain the easiest way to access the blades. Fron the rear looks easiest however any feedback would be appreciated.
The lens is a 45mm Yashinon f2.8 with a copal shutter

Just take out the lens elements, front and back. Then you have direct access to the blades. The rear lens can be removed w/o dismantling the camera.

Thanks Scott, are you making this sound simple because it is or is there a little more involved. Are we lookng at simple removing the lens face plate and then having access to the lens elements or am I going to have to "wrestle" with the shutter. If you are familiar with this lens, a more expanded breakdown of steps would be truely appreciated.

The design of the J model is basically the same as the Minister I and II with the f2.8 lens. They are all built like most of the other Japanese rangefinders of the early to mid 1960s. Simpler than most, because they are completely manual-- no electronics or auto anything.

As I recall, the lens elements front and back can be removed without haveing to dismantle anything else. At most, a threaded ring or two might first have to be taken off the front, in order to get the front lens group out.

Once the glass is gone, you have access to clean the blades. The cleaning process is explained in some of the tutorials on this site.

Thanks Scott. The cleaning I'm okay with, it was just the access to the blades that I was concerned with, thanks for the additional information.

Sometimes you can get away with just unscrewing the rear element, when the blades can carefully be freed up using a cotton bud, if necessary moistened with a little lighter fluid.
