Can anyone offer any advice or instruction about how to get the rangefinder on my 5000e to look brighter so that I can focus more easily?

At the moment it's gone pretty dim and is pretty damn hard to use.

1) is it overall dim, or is it the contrast of the double-image patch weak?
2) do you (or anybody in your household) smoke?

Rick Oleson's solution is to put a small dot of tape on the front-center of the main viewfinder window. See his site for the details.

Deteriorating light seals and rf mirrors seem more the rule than the exception with the Japanese rangefinder cameras. What you definitely don't want to do is to try to clean the front-surface mirror, which will only further worsen the problem.
